While interviewing for a job with the Vexicon Corporation he relives his fifth grade year - fondly remembering his teacher, Mrs. Carroll, who helped him become a productive student, allowing him to grow into the man he is today. Sam's path was fraught with unfortunate circumstances and his life seemed to be on a road doomed for failure. His teacher, Mrs. Carroll, is faced with the question, 'Who will help Sam? Mrs. Carroll's answer to that question changes not only Sam's life, but the heart of a fellow burned-out teacher, Mrs. Russell.
